After a wreck in Dothan

Five steps that protect your claim.

  1. Call 911 and get a report. Dothan Police, the Houston County Sheriff, or a state trooper on US-231 or US-84 will document the crash.
  2. Get checked by a doctor. Go to Southeast Health, Flowers Hospital, or your own doctor, even if you feel fine. Some injuries show up days later.
  3. Photograph everything. Vehicles, the road, your injuries, and the other driver's insurance card. Get witness names and numbers.
  4. Don't give a recorded statement. The other driver's insurer will ask. You can decline until you've talked with a lawyer.
  5. Call us before you sign anything. A quick release can end your claim before you know the full cost of your injuries.

Alabama-specific

Why calling early matters more here than almost anywhere.

Alabama is one of a handful of states that still uses contributory negligence. If an insurer can show you were even slightly at fault, it may argue you can recover nothing at all.

That makes the first days after an accident decisive: what you say, what evidence gets preserved, and how fault is documented. We step in early so the record reflects what really happened.

Questions clients ask first

How do I know if I have a personal injury case?

You may have a case if another person or business owed you a duty of care, failed to meet it, and that failure caused you real harm such as medical bills, lost wages or pain. We review the facts with you during a free consultation and explain your options.

How long do I have to file a personal injury claim in Alabama?

In most Alabama personal injury cases, a lawsuit must be filed within two years of the injury. Claims against a city can require written notice within six months. Exceptions exist, so talk with a lawyer early.

What if I was partly at fault for the accident?

Alabama follows contributory negligence, one of the strictest fault rules in the country. If you are found even slightly at fault, it can bar your recovery in many cases. Limited exceptions apply, which is why how fault is documented early matters.

Do you charge upfront fees for personal injury cases?

No. Personal injury cases are typically handled on a contingency fee, so attorney fees are paid from a recovery. Injury consultations are free. Criminal defense consultations carry a consultation fee, and representation is usually a flat or hourly fee. All terms are confirmed in writing before we start.

Should I talk to police without a lawyer?

You have the right to remain silent and to ask for an attorney. Stay polite, say you want a lawyer, and do not answer questions about the accusation until you have counsel.

Do you handle criminal defense in Dothan?

Yes. We defend DUI, drug, assault, domestic violence, theft, probation and other charges in Dothan Municipal Court and Houston County courts, and across the Wiregrass. Partner Raynor Clifton is a former Houston County prosecutor.
